Volunteer Journey

Welcome to MercyWorks!

Your experience as a MercyWorker will be unique, and will differ from mine.  Even so, I thought I would offer insight on a few things you might expect throughout the upcoming year

A Year On…As a 22 Year Old Grandpa

I have become increasingly frustrated by the designation of taking a “year off” from school.  In lieu of this frustration, this year “off” has become quite the opposite for me: it is a year “on.”

Being a Father Figure and a Light of Hope

I am constantly reminded that I cannot cease to hope and to instill hope in those around me.  This business of hoping, giving hope, and recognizing hope already present in each youth is at the center of my efforts as a youth care worker.

An Open Door to 13 Friends & Housemates

As MercyWorkers, the fourteen of us have two full-time responsibilities: to work for the youth of Mercy Home and to live in conscious community with one another. Two distinct tasks, two distinct challenges, one amazing place.

A Gift to Our Entire Family

When my daughter Katie called in late October, 2006 to tell me that she had decided to do a year of service after graduating from college, I have to admit that I wasn’t thrilled. …And I have come to change my attitude about the volunteer year.  Katie’s volunteer year with MercyWorks was a gift to our entire family.
